HYDROMULCH FAQ
Is Hydromulch a new technology?
Hydromulch is a method of seeding that has been used since 1953.
Where can you use Hydromulch?
Hydromulch can be used in any areas where turf coverage is needed.
Why is the mulch green in color?
The wood and paper mulches that are used in the Hydromulching process are white in color. Green dye is added to assist in the application process so that application is accurate and even.
What happens when it rains on the Hydromulching?
When applied corrected by a quality contractor, natural rainfall will not cause shifting or movement, even with severe slopes. Down spouts, ditches and other forms of channeling water may require additional attention and should be addressed by your contractor.
Can I Hydromulch over weeds?
Hydromulching over weeds is not recommended unless your primary interest is erosion control. Weeds respond positively to the water and fertilizer used in the Hydroseeding process and can smother newly planted seedlings.
Do I have to prepare the soil?
Killing weeds, in addition to loosening and amending the soils with additives, promotes quicker and healthier grass establishment. Adding compost and amendments are the best way to promote healthy turf for the long term, reducing watering, fertilizing and stress.
My yard is saturated with water, what can I do?
Stop further watering until the yard dries out and then resume watering at the same rate with a reduced volume. The yard should be moist to wet, not saturated.
I have green / black mold, what can I do?
Mold is typically a sign of over-watering. Algae spores respond positively to warm, wet conditions and the presence of fertilizer but will not hurt new turf growth or stop turf from germinating / growing. Decrease watering and do not allow for puddles to stand for more than a few hours.
My grass is purple, what can I do?
Purple color shows that the grass is unable to breathe and absorb nurtrients, indicative of over-watering. Reduce watering slightly and refrain from watering at night. Fertilizing and reducing watering will assist in grass recovery.
Can I use weed control chemicals?
Weed control chemicals are not recommended as newly planted lawns are extremely sensitive to chemicals. Consult with your contractor on safe and appropriate chemicals and fertilizers for your Hydroseeded lawn.
I have weeds, what can I do?
Preparation is the key; eliminate existing weeds prior to Hydroseeding with a recommended weed killer. After HydroSeeding, it is best to hand weed as most chemicals will damage immature grasses.
Is Hydromulch a superior method of planting grass when compared to straw mulching, sprigging or sodding?
There are advantages and disadvantages to each method and the most appropriate one for you will depend on many variables. Talk to your contractor in determining the best method of plating for you. In Hydromulch, seed, fertilizer and mulch are applied in one step providing better weed and erosion control.
What is expected of me as a customer?
Good mulch application will assist in providing you with a healthy yard, reducing moisture evaporation from the soil. Without adequate irrigation, the establishment time and coverage will vary significantly. To ensure quality turf, proper watering is essential. An in-ground irrigation system makes the application of water much easier and more efficient.
Will I lose soil?
A good mulch application also provides erosion resistance. When soil erosion is reduced or prevented, and the seeds are held in place, a more uniform coverage of grass is assured.
When will I see grass?
Growth depends on both the planting season and grass type. Typical germination time is one week with growth in two weeks and mowing in three weeks. Consult with your contractor for grass growth expectancy.
What do I need to know about mowing?
Mow when the grass is high enough. Mow often to stimulate runners and to thicken turf. When a lawn is allowed to grow tall, it also thins. With Bermuda grasses, the green is in the top 1/3 of the plant….. so, if you let it grow too tall, it will look yellow after mowing (you cut off all the green part) Bermudas are greener if mowed twice a week. It can be detrimental to all lawn grasses to let grow too tall, plus it is hard to mow.
After getting your new Hydromulch lawn you need to keep all the clippings off of it by bagging, raking or mowing often. These clippings can create dead spots in your yard (sometime the size of your hand to large spots) The young grass just planted has its only root system underneath it, a baby plant, so if you suffocate it, the plant will die. Mature grasses have a strong root system and with types of plants that have runners, the suffocated plant can pull resources from other areas not affected by the suffocation. After the lawn matures, this is not a problem.
I accidentally over-fertilized, what can I do?
Water as much as possible to leach out excess fertilizer. Consult with your contractor for more information and assistance.
Do I need to lime my soil?
Lime needs depend on soil pH and the type of grass you are planting. In some areas of the country, the soil is a pH of 7 to 8 and can grow only certain types of grass. Consult with your contractor for soil testing and recommendations.
